Read chapter one: The No Name Woman. This chapter includes many of the important themes throughout the novel such as the place of women in traditional Chinese culture, the difficulty of growing up as an immigrant in America, the perils of sexual passion, and the most difficult to represent-the question of what is really Chinese and what is really just stuff from the movies. Pick one of these themes and write about it. You’ll want to follow your theme throughout the entire book, so choose a theme you are interested in.
