The final project for the course will be a collection of communicative strategies that can be used by educators, service providers, and parents/families. This final project will serve to provide information, strategies, and resources beyond this course. You will create your eCommunication Notebook in a word document that can be emailed to service providers and parents, (and/or printed and placed in a 3-ring notebook).

The objectives of this eCommunication Notebook will be for you to demonstrate proficiency identifying and remediating communication challenges by:

  • Identifying the types of prevalent communicative disorders associated with disability
  • Characteristics of these communicative challenges/disorders
  • Identify evidence-based strategy to effectively communicate with students and/or adults with the identified disabilities
  • Determine Augmentative Alternative Communication (ACC) UofM lesson plan devices recommended
  • Using the UofM lesson plan template (or your schools’ template), design lesson plans with embedded strategies addressing English Language Learners (ELL) and Vernacular English Speaking (VES) students

 

For this final, you will submit your eCommunication Notebook as a word document.

 

Elements to Include:

The notebook should be divided into two major groups, (1) Disability, and (2) Language Diversity:

(1) Disability

  1. ASD
  2. Intellectual Disabilities
  3. Learning Disabilities
  4. ADHD
  5. Cerebral Palsy
  6. Traumatic Brain Injury
  7. Deaf/Hearing Impairment

For each of the above disabilities include:

  1. Characteristics of the disability AND known common language problems
  2. Describe one method to communicate with individuals with the disability.
  3. Does research recommend any augmentative or alternative communication devices? If so, what/how are they used?
  4. Identify a local facility or resource center you would recommend to parents of children with this disability and communicative need.
    1. **(You may use the same facility up to 3 times for all of the disabilities listed above…try to locate a variety of resources). Include the name of the facility, the address (physical & website), general information about the center/facility, and a contact person.
  5. Include any reference material used to research disability.

 

(2) Language Diversity

  1. English Language Learners (ELL)
  2. Vernacular English Speakers (VES)

For each of the above language need above include:

  1. Descriptors
  2. Known common communication challenges in the classroom related to each listed need above
  3. Develop one lesson plan for EACH topic (ELL & VES) that uses at least one effective, evidence-based instructional language strategy beneficial to students that are ELL or VES.
    1. The lesson plan/s can address any content area (literacy, mathematics, science, social studies) as long as the strategy used is based in research and determined to be effective for the students. Make certain the instructional strategy has research that supports its practice with the ELL or VES students.
  4. Use the University of Memphis Lesson Plan template (or your schools’ template if currently employed in a school).
  5. Include any reference material used to research the topic.
