Life-long Learning
One of the objectives of university engineering programs is for graduates to recognize the need
for life-long learning. What may not be obvious to students is that this is part “why” and part “how”.
A common term in academic literature is self-directed learnersor self-regulated learners, who are defined by personal initiative, perseverance and adoptive skill. They use skills
such as setting goals, finding a strategy and then evaluating if that strategy worked.
The first part of your essay should address the “why” of your personal life-long learning. What are your personal career goals and why do you need life-long learning?
The second part should cover “how” you can engage in life-long learning. This is more specific to your chosen discipline. What learning experiences have worked well for you in the past? What
are some accepted ways to keep yourself “current” in your chosen profession? What ways do you think will work best for you in the future?
