Week 6, the first of two essays is due. As listed on page 3 of the course syllabus, there are two essays to be completed in this course.
It does not matter to the instructor which essay you complete first . It only is important that you turn in an essay on the appropriate deadline: Week 6 and Week 15. The book review is worth 100 points. The film essay is worth 70 points.

Structural Format – All essays must be a minimum of four typed, double-spaced pages. Footnote where necessary and lists sources if used. Two essays must be submitted for grading according to the timelines contained in the syllabus. One of the essays must be a book review, the other a film review. .
1. Book Review – A book review from a list of books chosen by the instructor or an appropriate scholarly work of your choosing and approved by the instructor. The book review shall address the following topics ):
a. A thorough description of the subject matter and the historical context.
b. Background on the author?
c. What is the main theme(s) of the book?
d. A reasonable interpretation of the theme(s) conveying any historical topics, social thought, cultural beliefs, and values of the society.
e. What type of book is it?
f. Does the author accurately describe the historical record?
g. Is the book historically important?
h. Overall impressions of the book

2. Film – rent and write a critical review of a film from a list provided by the instructor. The film review shall consist of:
a. A thorough description of the film, including the subject matter, and the historical context.
b. A reasonable interpretation of the theme(s), conveying any historical topics, social thought, cultural beliefs, and/or values.
c. A comparison to the historical record does the movie accurately reflect the time period and historical events?
d. Overall impressions of the film.
e. Is the film historically important?
f. Overall strength/weaknesses of the film.
