Description

Introduction for Male Struggle for Identity in Selected Plays of Sam Shepard.

The Introduction consists of the following sections:

1. Section One will be dedicated to Sam Shepard, his works and his role in American theatre .

2. Section Two will explore the concept of identity in general.

3. Section Three will be a general discussion of male identity in America especially in the twentieth century. It will investigate male characters with the aim to identify the difficulty of male characters in Sam Shepard’s plays, their notion of manhood and to what extent it is affected by the image of the American male during the twentieth century. This section will attempt to address why male characters in most of Shepard’s plays, especially in the Family Plays, seem to be suffering from collapsing possibilities to safeguard or preserve their identities. Often they appear unable to maintain any identity. Rather than an essential, fixed essence, masculinity seems to be a construct which needs the flexibility that these men fear. The American male of the twentieth century is indisputably faced a number of expectations and is expected to successfully manage his roles in both arenas: public and private. Undoubtedly, the private role as husband- father seems to be premised on his role that in the public sphere.
