1. Read this week’s set reading by Elizabeth Glickfeld 2010 in Meanjin 69 (3) pp. 26-32
2. Note the author’s comments that designers have a complex job in giving form to abstract values, concepts and attitudes in a single identity.
3. Select two 21st Century place-branding identities of different cities, but not Melbourne. . Feel free to select a regional city, or a smaller town identity, it doesn’t have to be a capital. Don’t use a country.
4. Write approx 350 words, comparing and contrasting what the designers have chosen to communicate about these two cities and how they have done so.
What can we learn about the cities (geography, climate, architecture) and their people (history, culture and values) from the identities? Consider the typefaces, imagery and mark-making (illustrative elements), colours, proportion, line, shape, etc.
Refer to at least one of the concepts about the demands of identity design discussed in the article using a quote to support your argument. Make sure you introduce and conclude your argument.
