Objectives: To familiarize the student with current economic issues.
Grading Criteria and Points: Instructor will grade the assignment for written communication skills, use and relevance to the course material, and critical thinking skills. Concepts, assumptions, arguments, and conclusions should be clearly and thoroughly expressed.
Description of assignment: Students are required to complete a 5 page position paper, full pages not including the title and reference pages, longer is fine. The purpose of the research paper is to facilitate your learning about a specialized economics topic as well as to help you become a better writer and critical thinker. Students should demonstrate their ability to transfer classroom content into a real life application.
Choose an original topic, one that is different from one you have used for a similar assignment in another class. Also, make sure it has two debatable sides. Your paper should be a position paper, i.e. you are to defend a position (argue a stance, or opinion) on an economic issue. Your position should be stated emphatically in the first paragraph of your paper. The bulk of your paper should include research and economic reasoning to defend your position. You may include a recommended policy course of action.
Within your paper you will then explain the disadvantages of the current system, and the advantages of the proposed system.
