Explain what you think is the most significant way in which globalisation has affected the worlds of work and employment over the past twenty years.
Digital Globalization in the workplace
In the last 20 years we have become a digitally connected economy and this shift in digital form of globalization changes who is participating and how business is conducted across borders, making it easier to communicate on a global scale. These developments have played a significant role in the increase of globalization and the impacts on work and employment, specifically through the transformation of ICT , culminating in a digitally connected global economy.
In the 1990’s, the public internet was in its infancy, yet by 2014 the internet had become a global network connecting billions of people and companies around the globe. Today we have 3.5 billion people online, meaning social media platforms are used by one-in-three and more than two-thirds of the world use the internet.
With the rapid growth of this more recently formed digital globalization, it has changed how business is conducted across borders and how rapidly competition moves and has opened the doors to small companies, start-ups and Entrepreneurs. There has also been a significant surge in digital flows with commerce, video and communications, allowing employees to work from their own choice of location in the world, yet feel connected to their organization through video calls.
Small businesses are now able to become ‘micro-multinationals’ globally, through digital platforms, learning, finding work, building networks and connecting with clients, suppliers and customers from any one country to another.
