For paper 2, your second comparison/contrast essay, advance a a thesis in which you compare and contrast two characters using Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and/or Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler.
You must narrow down to a specific topic, then then formulate a specific thesis. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: how individuals conform to or defy social expectations; the role of work in determining the individual’s meaning; relationships between husbands and wives, or parents and children; breaking or enforcing the law; how economic forces affect or shape lives and relationships?
The handout, Doing a Comparison/Contrast Essay, provides guidelines for doing this and all essays this semester.
