Overview:
Sociologists study the connection between individuals and society, applying three key theoretical perspectives to understand the social world. Each perspective provides a different focus for explaining social problems, such as divorce, and their impacts within the private and public spheres of society.
*Interactionists focus on micro-level action (i.e., individual, small group factors) and the meanings we attach to them, and how we communicate with one another.
*Functionalists focus on macro-level functions (i.e., institutions, structures) to see how components of society fit together.
*Conflict theorists focus on macro-level inequalities (i.e., dominant group, power) to understand how conflict is created between competing groups.
You will use the three theoretical perspectives to respond to this week’s discussion questions examining divorce rates and the effects of divorce on society.
