Effects of Social Media on Mental Health
Background: Social media is defined as “forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information (Oxford, 2022). In 2022, 83% and more of adults now use a social networking site of some kind. The most popular social networking sites are Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Two third of Facebook users visit the site at least once a day, with about 40% doing so multiple times throughout the day. About 300 million Facebook users were mobile-only users. These statistics are just one of many media platforms. The impact on mental health has been extensively studied, measured, and reported.
Discussion Question: What impact does social media have on mental health? If so, does it have positive or negative effects on individuals? What primary, secondary and tertiary interventions can be made to prevent negative outcomes for the public as a mental health professional?
