Since early 2020, the WHO have recommended the wearing of face masks in order to cut down transmission of COVID-19.
Whilst essential for protecting our own and other people’s health such masks limit our ability to read the social information presented by the lower half of the face. Carbon has recently shown significantly impaired recognition of facial displays of emotions when perceiving a face wearing a surgical mask.
