But how do we participate in reading besides just… reading? The answer is probably a lot simpler than you are thinking right now. All you have to do is relate the reading itself to your own experiences. Is there a passage that made you laugh? Why did you laugh at it? Did it remind you of a memory? Is there a passage where you agree with the reader? Why? Is there a passage that reminds you of a topic you are learning or have learned in another class? What topic? What class? Relating a text to your own experience is how you can actively absorb and retain that information.
