After reading accounts of the Meiji period by Fukuzawa Yukichi, the late Meiji period, and Kayano Shigeru, it is striking how differently the emergence of Japan’s modernity was experienced by certain members of Japanese society.
With this in mind, compare and contrast the experiences of Fukuzawa and Kayano in a 5-7-page paper, double-spaced, with 12-point font, and carefully proofread. Importantly, by writing memoirs, these men sought to craft historical legacies of Japan’s modern experience.
What sort of legacies did they seek to create and what does this say about the power of history to invent nations?
