This week, we read and learned about Schizophrenia (SZ) and other psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia continues to be a poorly understood condition, in terms of its causes, treatments, and at a societal level – the experiences that individuals challenged with such a disorder endure. Let’s watch a really well-done documentary about SZ. I particularly like Surviving Schizophrenia because it features Elyn Saks, a well-known Oxford educated lawyer who has lived her adult life with Schizophrenia. It also introduces us to Debra and Paris, who are mental health professionals and share their experiences with their symptoms. Finally, the documentary touches about the stigma that individuals with SZand other psychotic disorders can experience from society. As you watch, use these questions to guide you and also to construct your reflection paper:
Describe Debra’s history of symptoms of SZ and history of treatment:
What does Debra do professionally? How would you describe her level of functioning?
Describe Elyn’s history of symptoms of SZ and history of treatment:
What does Debra do professionally? How would you describe her level of functioning?
Describe Paris‘s history of symptoms of SZ and history of treatment:
What does Paris do professionally? How would you describe his level of functioning?
How do the three individuals view SZ as an illness? (perhaps contrast when first diagnosed vs. current perspectives)
What do the individuals think is the best treatment, or “key ingredients” for treatment and recovery for SZ ?
