Upon completion of the “Conflict Reaction Profile,” my score was a total of seven, “Assertive.” “You are professionally assertive when dealing with people, particularly difficult people. Continue to be open to listening to different points of view, and express your ideas and opinions appropriately.”
Who will be the hardest person for you to communicate with daily at work? Why?
One day I had walked past by supervisor’s office where he had been yelling back and forth with another supervisor. I immediately took notice that the clients in the house were able to hear this argument and were listening closely. Although I did not wish to overstep my supervisor, I felt obligated to take a few deep breaths and approach the office kindly with a smile. I was able to distract my superiors briefly from yelling at one another and point out that the clients were able to hear them and that it did not seem beneficial if the clients sensed conflict within management. I asked if I can stay to play the role of a mediator as if it were a family session which led to healthy communication and feelings being heard rather than a screaming competition.
Utilizing the new knowledge from the “Managing Conflict,” explain which strategies would be more helpful in the past situation and which new conflict resolution skills you plan to exercise at your internship.
