In the year 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution ended all doubt that the status of former slaves was to be abolished everywhere. Or so we say, in actuality, 750,000 black people were killed at the hands of old white confederates who could not let go. They believed that “Negros were an inferior race” That Blacks needed to be controlled or ruled over as they were the only ones to accomplish that. It all began in the early 17th and 18th century before the civil war began.
Africans were being kidnapped from their villages, separated from their family, and sold on auction blocks as if they were cattle for sale. It indeed was a very lucrative industry grossing billions of dollars. Africans were then forced into slavery as the Europeans despise that Africans can run great kingdoms that flourish. The beauty of it all was their organizational skills, systematic and rational thinking allowed them to progress further than Europeans.
Now let’s fast forward; to the 1860s, Presidential elections began in the United States between Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan. The country was in disarray due to economic and social differences between the North and South, Slavery, and territories. The beginning of the civil war.
Newly elected President Abraham Lincoln, put in place the Presidential Reconstruction plan which President Lincoln appointed army generals to serve temporarily, as they would govern the confederate areas.
Moreover, the southern region generated 30% of the United States’ wealth. Top products were sugar, rice, tobacco, and cotton. Which for years, slaves were at the center of attention for generations. Africans were exploited to work as indentured servants and labor in the production of crops. Also, slaves were not allowed to learn to read, write, or attend church. That was no way to treat other human beings; Radical Republicans favored the drastic transformation of southern society. They wanted ex-slaves to have full citizenship. But fell short on other daunting questions. Such as: ” What is Freedom?” “Is it the bare privilege of not being chained?” Asked Congressman James A. Garfield in early 1865. On March 3, 1865, General Oliver O. Howard was appointed to lead the Freed men’s Bureau. The sole purpose of the Freed men’s Bureau: was to assist the suffering men, women, and children that were ex-slaves.
Why did congress pass the 14th amendment in 1866? also( Ratified in 1867?) and how was it weakened by the Supreme Court?
