Plagiarism is taking someone else’s ideas and work and pass them off as one’s own without giving that person credit. Direct plagiarism is taking someone’s work word for word without giving credit to that person. Self-plagiarism is taking one’s own words that were published in research papers and published books and using them for a new paper or book. Mosaic plagiarism is like direct plagiarism. Mosaic plagiarism is when someone takes parts of a source without citing and keeping with the general meaning of the original writing. Mosaic plagiarism is sometimes referred to as patch writing. Accidental plagiarism is when someone takes a portion of a text and forgets to cite the source.
There are many consequences for plagiarism. Plagiarism affects the author. They may feel devasted especially the work of the mind is unique. Plagiarism destroys the past knowledge by refusing readers to access to sources. Plagiarism encourages sloppy research. If plagiarizing starts here and there, as the work goes on, plagiarizing becomes more frequent. Plagiarism brings out the worst in people. Plagiarism scandals affect those who are not guilty, and rumors will start to follow. There have been some famous cases of plagiarism. Britney Spears was sued for plagiarizing a song in 2005. A songwriter, Steve Wallace, did not copyright the song formally until 2003. Britney Spears copyrighted her song in 1999. Another plagiarism scandal was about the book The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany. It was written by Stephen Ambrose. He was criticized for plagiarizing parts of the book Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II written by Thomas Childers. Plagiarism should be avoided because it takes away one’s integrity and is an ethical issue. Plagiarized work is trying to benefit from the outcome weather the intent is to get a good grade or compensation.
