Think carefully about the ideas of character, conflict, and close reading in Tis Pity She’s a Whore. The meaning of the first two terms should be obvious. Close reading refers to a type of analysis; it is a descriptive account of a text that highlights a few of its special concrete details or characteristics and uses them to make an interpretive argument about the text’s meaning.
